The ups and downs of life are numerous and varied. While many are wonderful and expected, others might be sudden, catching you off guard. Both types of changes have the potential to be challenging emotionally and/or physically.

You might notice that you're feeling overwhelmed with tasks that once seemed easy to manage and not choosing the best self-soothing methods. It's possible you're eating too much (or too little), drinking too much, or engaging in activities that aren't in your best interest during your life transition.

Focusing on daily tasks at work or at home might have become a struggle. Your mind may be racing when you're trying to fall asleep, consumed with thoughts about how you're going to navigate an impending change. Or perhaps you're waking up wondering how your life will look now that things are different than they were before. Life transitions therapy can be a great way to help you face these challenges.

Anxiety, Stress, Sadness, and Overwhelm are Common During Major Life Transitions

Regardless of the type of change you're undergoing or plan to undergo in your life, it's normal to experience a range of emotions.

Empty Nester Counseling

Becoming an empty nester once the kids go off to college or embark on their careers is anticipated, but changes related to the transition may leave some people blind-sided.

Retirement Counseling

Many people plan for retirement but are surprised that when in the thick of it, it’s not at all what they envisioned.

Caregiver Counseling

Needing to assume the responsibilities for an aging loved one can impact not only one’s emotional and physical well-being, but also relationships with other family members.

Career Change Counseling

When people embark on their first career, change careers, or start a business, there are likely to be some bumps along the way which they hadn’t foreseen.

Therapy for Romantic Relationships

When we're beginning a new romantic relationship, such as getting married or moving in together, how we think things will unfold isn’t always the way they do unfold.

People oftentimes don’t disclose, discuss, or discuss enough, what they expect from their partner or what their dealbreakers are. As time goes on, it's inevitable those issues will begin to surface.

Deciding whether to fight for the relationship or leave it is an important decision as couples contemplate potential changes in their lives. Regardless, therapy with a life transitions counselor can be very helpful.

Unexpected Changes

And then there are the unexpected crises which can upend our lives – either short-term or longer-term - such as breakups, job loss, illness, injuries, or traumatic events, including interpersonal abuse and/or social violence.

You may find that you can identify with one of the situations mentioned or perhaps yours is unique. Regardless, therapy with a life transitions therapist can be very helpful during trying times.

Life Transitions Therapy in New York Can Help You Navigate Change

There are various ways that speaking with a therapist who is experienced in life change counseling can help you adapt to a new phase of life:

  • Looking at the aspects of your transition that feel challenging, from different perspectives, allowing you to see your situation in a different light.

  • Strategizing practical solutions that will best serve you.

  • Assisting you in untangling the causes of conflicts when relationships with partners, family members, colleagues, or friends become contentious.

My Approach to Life Transitions Therapy

Even if two people are undergoing the same life transition, the way each person experiences it, is unique.  Your specific challenges, support system, and goals, are what I will focus on.

Any feelings that may arise during both expected and unexpected life transitions are perfectly normal, and you needn't experience them alone.  We'll speak about them and process them, together.

You may need guidance figuring out next steps.  For many people, there is a tendency to lump all the steps of the transition together, making the change seem more complicated than need be.

Perhaps what will help you is thinking about your change in a healthier, more productive way.  It's not unusual for people to get fixated upon the most frightening or cumbersome aspect of the life transition.  Together, in life transitions counseling, we can look at your specific thought processes and see how they may be getting in your way.

It could be that you need to find new emotional resources to make your change more bearable.  These resources can be family, friends, animal family members, or deeply gratifying activities like meditation or a spiritual practice.  Each person's resources are unique and clarifying the ones that already exist or finding new ones, can be done in life change therapy.

Relationships with family members can be taxing during some life transitions, resulting in frayed nerves and hurt feelings.  It's not unusual for old emotional wounds, never fully addressed, to pop up and add to an already tough life change.  In counseling, we'll examine why they might be surfacing at this time and together, come up with ideas to work through them.

It might be your family isn't supportive of the change that is happening or will soon happen.  Or perhaps your house is divided, with some family members on board with the transition while others, are not.  If that's the case, it could be helpful to have a family therapy session where everyone states their case and together, determine the best resolution for everyone.

A life transition can bring uncomfortable feelings to the surface.  Self-doubt, guilt, and regret are just a few of the feelings that may arise.  During life transitions therapy, we can examine those feelings and belief systems.

As a life transitions therapist, I can work with you on any or all of this.

Whether to Pursue Life Transitions Therapy in New York

You may find you still have a few questions that you need answered before deciding. Many people do and it's always good to get the information you need to make the best decision, for you.

Will my concerns be too complicated to resolve?

The truth is that even if your issue is complex, there is always something that can be done to improve some aspect of the situation.

What if I don't like the therapist's recommendations?

What's important to remember is that it's your therapy and you are under no obligation to accept any suggestions. If a recommendation feels wrong to you, or something you don't feel comfortable doing, always speak up so you and the life transitions counselor can discuss your feelings.

What if I become overwhelmed during the session?

If you've been very overwhelmed in your daily life dealing with the change, there's certainly the possibility you'll feel that way in therapy sessions, as you discuss what is happening. There's nothing to be embarrassed about if that occurs. It's a normal and very common reaction. You will have the guidance of a supportive life transitions counselor every step of the way.
