Losing a Beloved Pet is Devastating
When our pets die, it can often feel like we've lost a part of ourselves. Your pet might have been by your side during pivotal moments of your life such as graduations, marriage, divorce, new jobs, deaths, a first home, or a first child.
When thinking about those times in your life, memories of your beloved pet will likely arise too. But happy memories might be turning bittersweet, because your pet is no longer sharing your life's journey. You may be feeling that your grief over losing your pet is absorbing all your energy and attention.
Those moments in the past when you might have felt depressed or anxious, you may have found relief just by looking into your pet's eyes. Their energy, whether calm or energetic, likely boosted your mood.
Now, without your pet's physical presence, you may find that you're more depressed or anxious. Meeting with a pet loss counselor can help you with that depression and/or anxiety.
You may have felt that your pet gave you a reason to get up in the morning. The daily routines of caring for your animal family member might have been very grounding for you. Now that your pet is gone, it may feel like a struggle to get through the day as you're overtaken by feelings of sadness and emptiness. You might even feel disconnected from family and friends.
You and your animal family member were a team, regardless of how many years you shared, and now a deeply loved and valued member of that team is gone. This is a time where grief counseling for pet owners can be a vital resource.
Pet Grief Counseling Can Provide Much Needed Support
Grief is a natural response to losing a loved one whether the loss is a pet or a human. Too often, people who are suffering from the loss of their pets feel isolated, marginalized, invalidated, alone, and traumatized. This is where counseling for pet loss can be very helpful.
When our pets pass away, the grief can feel overwhelming and their loss can feel impossible to navigate. Mourning our pets can often be a complex and multi-faceted experience, impacting different parts of our lives.
Unfortunately, for many people, their deep grief over the loss of their pet is frequently met with insincere condolences, flippant remarks, and rolls of the eyes. “It’s only an animal,” is the oft-heard response to these mourners and that is usually followed by, “just get another one.” This may result in people choosing to cut themselves off from others.
It’s important to openly share your feelings and experiences with people who truly understand and respect them. That will help you move through the grieving process a little more easily.
A pet loss counselor can offer you a safe and supportive space to express your emotions and process your grief, without judgement and with empathy, during this difficult time.
Pets may pass away peacefully on their own or they may be euthanized. When an animal is suffering, euthanasia is often the most humane decision. Nevertheless, many people still doubt their decision. They keep wondering if they waited too long, or not long enough. Guilt takes over.
It's so important that people gain clarity over their decision to alleviate any unnecessary guilt. Pet loss counseling can help you understand the different components of your grief that may be interfering with you moving forward.
My Approach To Pet Loss Therapy
I’ve always been a big animal lover. Because of my concern for both animals and people, I've always wanted to support the individuals who have lost their pets or are anticipating such a loss.
That work may entail helping people cope with their difficult emotions by offering strategies for relaxation, supporting their adjustment to a life without their pet, or working with them on any traumatic material that may arise during pet grief therapy.
When people are grieving their pet, they usually find it quite difficult to relax. Their minds are racing and their bodies are tense. I can offer different strategies to help you find some calm during the storm.
Everyone who has ever lived with a pet had their daily rituals: walking their dog along a familiar path at a set time, scooping the litter box, replenishing the bird seed, cleaning the fish tank, etc. Once these rituals end, life can feel empty. Finding new rituals and finding a renewed meaning in life is something I can help you with in pet grief counseling.
Disturbing images of a pet's last moments can get in the way of people moving through their grief. I can work with you to lessen the impact of those images.
There are also times when the loss of a pet brings up other loses, traumas, or fractured relationships. In pet loss counseling, I will work with you to help you heal from those issues, as well.
Your therapy sessions will be tailored to your specific needs and circumstances. Honoring your pet’s memory while providing specialized grief support is the goal of pet loss counseling.
Deciding whether to pursue pet loss counseling
You may still have some questions about pet grief therapy.
When will I begin to feel better?
Each person's loss and healing process is unique, so the length of time it will take to feel better will be different for everyone. What I can tell you is that within the first week, many people in pet loss counseling notice a subtle improvement in their mood and functioning.
Can you help me even if my pet is still alive?
Absolutely. This is called, anticipatory grief and it often occurs when caretaking a sick or elderly animal. However, anticipatory grief can also be experienced by people with young and healthy animals. They are stepping into tomorrow at the expense of today.
How will I know if it's time or even if I should, get another pet?
During grief counseling for pet owners, this question often comes up. What I tell clients is that the answer will come to them once they've moved through the bereavement process. And if they're still undecided, we will of course discuss this during the pet loss therapy.
